The Untold Story

In 1865, a steamboat exploded on the Mississippi River and killed more people than the Titanic would 47 years later. Almost nobody has heard of it.

The Sultana was built to carry 376 passengers. That night, it carried over 2,100 - mostly Union soldiers just freed from Confederate prison camps, finally heading home.

A cracked boiler had been patched instead of properly repaired.

It happened twelve days after Lincoln’s assassination, while the entire country was consumed by the hunt for his killer. The worst maritime disaster in American history barely made the news.

More people died on the Sultana than on the Titanic - most of them men who had already survived the worst prison camps of the war. Almost nobody has heard of it, but the survivors never forgot.

💭 Captain J. Cass Mason had been promised a bonus for every prisoner he transported - part of why the boiler’s crack was patched instead of properly repaired before departure. He didn’t survive the explosion either.
