The Untold Story

Every July, a small town in the Philippines floats a towering shrine down a river to honor a holy cross first raised there in 1850.

In 1993, the shrine carried close to a thousand people. At eight fifteen that night, a firework meant to celebrate the crossing flew straight at it instead.

The crowd rushed to one side to dodge it. The barge tilted, the timber cracked, and the whole structure sank into the river.

The generator kept running even underwater, and survivors feared the lights sweeping past them meant they’d be electrocuted before they could swim free.

A thirteen-year-old Boy Scout swam back into the wreck again and again, pulling six children out alive. He was found dead the next morning.

More than two hundred people died that night. The festival still happens every July - but now no more than a hundred fifty people are allowed on board, and everyone wears a life vest.

Historical Discussion

💭 The boy who kept diving back in was 13-year-old Sahjid Bulig, a Boy Scout - he saved six children before running out of time himself. The Philippines later created a national heroism award named after him, still given out today.
