The Untold Story
In 1896, a sultan died suddenly in Zanzibar, and by nightfall his nephew had moved into the palace without British permission.
Britain wanted someone else on the throne. When he refused to step down, they sent an ultimatum: leave by nine the next morning, or be fired on.

His messenger said he didn’t believe they’d really open fire. At nine-oh-two the next morning, three British warships proved him wrong.
By nine-forty, it was over. Around five hundred people inside the palace were killed or wounded. Only one British sailor was hurt.
The whole war lasted thirty-eight minutes - the shortest ever recorded. And the losing side was billed for the shells that destroyed their own palace.

Historical Discussion
💭 The deposed sultan escaped Zanzibar on a German warship and spent 20 years in exile. The British finally captured him in 1916, exiled him twice more, and he wasn’t allowed home until years later - he died in Mombasa in 1927.
