What happens when a submarine’s window cracks seven miles under the sea? In 1960, two men descended into the Mariana Trench.

Jacques Piccard of Switzerland and Lieutenant Don Walsh boarded the bathyscaphe Trieste. Its steel walls were five inches thick.
They squeezed into the cramped steel sphere. Deep into the descent, a sharp bang shook the cabin.
An outer Plexiglas window had cracked under crushing pressure. But the steel sphere held, and they kept sinking.
At thirty-five thousand eight hundred feet down, they reached the seabed. Outside, crushing water pressure pressed against every square inch.
