The Untold Story

A feared emir spared a captive’s life because he couldn’t stop laughing at him. This was Central Asia, in the 1840s.

Years earlier, Britain sent an officer to talk him into freeing Russian slaves. The emir threw him in prison.

A second British officer came to win his release, the man who coined the phrase the Great Game. He was seized too.

In 1842, both were beheaded in the square before the emir’s fortress, accused of spying for Britain.

Then a missionary came to learn their fate, in full church robes. The emir shook with laughter, and spared him.

Two officers lost their heads. One man kept his, because an emir couldn’t stop laughing. Luck, or mercy? Tell me in the comments.
